Guy Fawkes Night 2009

As usual Wellington put on a spectacular firework display and evening of entertainment. We didn’t stay in town to watch the big bangs (but could hear them booming around the distant hills from our home). Earlier in the evening we enjoyed the fun of the fair on the waterfront, before returning home at dusk for our own firework fun. The girls are more than happy with the simply stuff at the moment and it is becoming quite a family tradition to huddle up together for a few bangs and sparkles on Guy Fawkes night.

While those big municipal firework displays are great for the “ohhh-ahhh-boom-boom” effect, nothing really beats the personal touch of DIY in the backyard, with parents showing kids these are things both of wonder and joy, but also of potential danger. Something not to be feared, but most definitely to be respected and treated with a sensible caution. A valuable life lesson.

The last public fireworks display I went to was in the UK. We used to got to the village one and then head back to the pub for food and booze. It was a very convivial night out amongst locals. I don’t like the big set piece diplays in cities so your backyard is perfect!
